Day 30 of 100

I'm pretty sure I learned a lesson with this painting. At first my response was, "Well, folks. THIS is why I don't attempt representational painting."

I really do prefer the abstract work I've been pulled to. But every once in a while I see something that touches me and I think, "I'd like to paint that." That's what happened today. I was sitting in front of the blank page and glanced up at the wall, at a photograph of a glorious sunflower and I wanted to paint that beauty.

Before I could remember that I DON'T DO REPRESENTATIONAL STUFF,
I was already into it.

I did not care at all for the piece partway through.

Then, with nothing to lose, I started playing with it.

Squiggles. Dots. Line work.

At the end I got something I think is "interesting."
Not at all what I started out to paint, but that's sorta my life lately.

I didn't give up on the piece. I'm proud of me for that.

Maureen -- I LOVE IT!! Seriously. When I opened my email, I literally gasped when I saw it...a good gasp. I think it is truly beautiful. I like all of your work -- but if I were you, I wouldn't be so afraid to try representational art...

I am also very proud that you stuck with it. :)

Thanks, Lauren, for the encouragement to NOT be afraid of representational art. And actually, nothing I do even approaches photo-realism, like some people can do. My definition of "representational" is: can a person see that it is a flower, bird, or whathaveyou . . .I think that still, much of even a representational piece, for me, will be very abstract and suggestive. But you are so right--I have let myself be dominated by that silly silly fear of "not being good enough." I say, ENOUGH of THAT !!! thanks for your encouragement.

I like it, Sis! Keep painting what YOU want to paint whether it is abstract or representational. You are not being graded...so do what you want.
